ModiFace, part of L'Oréal, builds augmented reality and AI technology that lets shoppers try on makeup and hair color virtually, analyze their skin and get personalized product suggestions. It is used by beauty brands and retailers rather than sold to consumers.

Shoppers see how a product looks on their own face in real time before buying, either on a brand's website, in an app or in store. The same technology powers skin diagnostics and recommendation engines, and it is built to run on ordinary devices at large scale.

The work draws on more than 20 years of beauty research, and ModiFace reports over a billion virtual try-on sessions. Brands engage it as a service through its sales team.
