Model Context Protocol
FreeOpen standard for connecting AI apps to tools, data and workflows
What is Model Context Protocol?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open specification that lets AI applications such as Claude or ChatGPT talk to outside systems through a common interface. Developers write an MCP server once and any compatible client can use its files, databases, tools or prompts.
The protocol defines clients, which live inside AI apps and agents, and servers, which expose resources and actions. Servers can run locally next to the user or remotely over the network, and the documentation covers both setups along with security guidance for each.
The project publishes official SDKs, an Inspector for testing and debugging servers, a set of example servers and a registry for discovering existing ones. The specification is versioned by date, and changes go through a public proposal process with community discussion on GitHub and Discord.
