What is GFPGAN?
GFPGAN is an open-source face restoration model from Tencent ARC that sharpens and repairs faces in low-quality, old or AI-generated images. It is built into many photo restoration apps and Stable Diffusion interfaces.
The model detects faces, rebuilds them with detail learned from a large face dataset, and pastes them back, optionally upscaling the background with Real-ESRGAN. Python scripts and online demos make it easy to try. It is free and open source, and is widely used as a face-fix step in image pipelines.
