Milvus is an open-source, distributed vector database designed for very large collections of embeddings. It is a graduated LF AI and Data project created by Zilliz, which also sells a managed version called Zilliz Cloud.
Milvus separates storage and compute, supports many index types including GPU indexes, and handles hybrid search with scalar filtering. Milvus Lite runs in a Python process for quick prototypes.
The database is free under Apache 2.0 and can run on Kubernetes. Zilliz Cloud offers a free tier, serverless usage pricing and dedicated clusters for production workloads.
