What is Ollama?
Ollama is a free app and command-line tool for downloading and running open models such as Qwen, Gemma, DeepSeek and gpt-oss on your own computer. It exposes a local API that many coding tools and chat apps use as their backend.
A single command pulls and runs a model, and Ollama handles quantized weights, GPU acceleration on Mac, Windows and Linux, and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The desktop app adds a simple chat window.
Ollama Cloud runs larger models on hosted GPUs through the same interface. Local use is free, and cloud plans include a free allowance plus Pro and Max subscriptions.
