Just The Gist
FreeFree Mac app that transcribes and summarizes videos on-device
What is Just The Gist?
Just The Gist is a free macOS app that turns YouTube videos, podcasts and lectures into transcripts and short summaries, processing everything locally on your Mac by default. It needs no account or API key, and cloud AI is optional.
Transcription runs on Whisper on Apple Silicon, and a local language model downloaded on first launch writes the summary. Summaries include a TL;DR and key topics with timestamps that jump back to the exact moment in the source.
You can paste YouTube links or drop MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4 and MOV files from Finder. If you prefer, summaries can use Claude, OpenAI or OpenRouter instead of the local model, and the project is funded by donations.
