How to choose the right AI tool for your job
A short, practical checklist for cutting through hundreds of AI tools and picking one that fits.
There are thousands of AI tools and a new one launches every day. Most people do not need to compare all of them. They need to pick two or three, try them on real work, and keep the one that sticks.
Start with the task, not the tool
Write down the one task you want to speed up. "Write better emails" is a task. "Use AI" is not. A clear task makes every later step easier, from filtering a directory to judging a free trial.
Shortlist with three filters
Use the category pages to find tools built for your task, then narrow the list:
- Pricing. Check for a real free tier, not just a trial that expires in a week.
- Fit. Does it plug into the apps you already use?
- Data. Where does your content go, and can you opt out of training?
You can also open the free tools list to try things without a card.
Test with your own work
Demos are tuned to look good. Run each shortlisted tool on the same three real examples and compare the results side by side.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Quality of output | The only thing that saves you time |
| Speed | Slow tools get abandoned |
| Editing effort | Output you must rewrite is not a win |
| Export options | Avoids lock-in later |
Decide, then revisit
Pick one and use it for two weeks. If you still reach for it daily, it earns a paid plan. If not, drop it and move to the next tool on your list. You can always compare tools side by side before you commit.
